Tarec Saffiedine also appeared on the show to talk about his fight with Larson on September 11. Saffiedine also discussed the surreal feeling of training with Dan Henderson and the MMA scene in his home country of Belgium.

Shark Fights 13 main event fighter Trevor Prangley was also on this episode. Prangley talked about his main event fight against Keith Jardine, his Strikeforce contract and living in Idaho.

Dave, Kevin and Julie talked about referee Yves Lavigne denying he participated in an interview with a Montreal newspaper where he supposedly gave his opinion on the Georges St-Pierre- Josh Koscheck title fight set for December 11.

All this and much more MMA talk on this 2-hour episode of Ringside Report Radio.

Sokoudjou and Houston Alexander on latest Ringside Report Radio show

UFC 118 full preview and picks

ufcposter118

UFC 118 takes place this Saturday August 28 in Boston, Massachusetts and will air on pay-per-view. Frankie Edgar will defend his newly won UFC lightweight championship against the man he defeated in April to win the belt, B.J. Penn. The UFC will do huge business for their first big show in Boston, holding a fan expo and other events all week in the city leading up to the fights. The pay-per-view is sure to be a classic as heavyweight boxing champion James Toney will face one of the greatest mixed-martial artists of all time, “The Natural” Randy Couture. Below is my preview and predictions for UFC 118. I went 6-5 in my selections for UFC 116 and 7-4 at UFC 117 (13-9 total).

Un-aired prelims

Mike Pierce (11-3) -260 v. Amilcar Alves (11-1) +200 (Welterweight- 170 lbs.)

Mike Pierce is a Vancouver, Washington based fighter with a wrestling background. He defeated Brock Larson via unanimous decision in his UFC debut but lost to Jon Fitch in his next fight. Pierce is 2-1 in the UFC with a win in March over Julio Paulino.

Amilcar Alves is a Brazilian fighter who will be making his UFC and North-American debut in this bout. He trains with Nova Uniao and has won 8 in a row since a 2007 submission loss to Fernando Paulon, a loss he avenged with a KO in his last fight. Alves has 8 consecutive wins in various promotions in Brazil. He has 4 of his wins via submission and 4 by decision.

Mike Pierce has shown some promise in his three fights in the UFC. Pierce gave Jon Fitch a very tough fight that went to a decision, which is an impressive feat. Amilcar Alves is an unknown factor who has proven to be a versatile fighter in Brazil. The Muay-Thai striking of Alves could be devastating for Pierce if he is unable to adapt and score a takedown. Pierce will look to wrestle in this fight and bring it to the mat to use his ground and pound. Alves’ ability to defend the takedown and either get to his feet once taken down or score a submission, could be his keys to victory. Alves has not faced the calibre of wrestler that Pierce is and will probably struggle to get to his feet once taken down. Mike Pierce via decision

Nick Osipczak (5-1) -150 v. Greg Soto (7-1) +120 (Welterweight- 170 lbs.)

Nick Osipczak was a member of Team UK on The Ultimate Fighter season 9 and lost via decision in the semi-finals to Damarques Johnson. Osipczak submitted housemate Frank Lester on the season 9 finale card and followed that up with a TKO win over Matthew Riddle at UFC 105. Osipczak suffered his first pro loss to Rick Story via a split-decision in April of this year.

Greg Soto lost his UFC debut via disqualification due to an illegal up-kick to Matthew Riddle in March. He is a Brazilian-Jiu-Jistu brown belt under Kurt Pellegrino and made his pro MMA debut in 2006, at the age of 18.

Nick Osipczak has demonstrated some solid skills and has looked strong in his short UFC career. Greg Soto is a young fighter who is basically undefeated and definitely evolving all aspects of his game. How much has Greg Soto evolved and can his striking compete with Osipczak’s? Those questions will be answered on Saturday night but Osipczak should have the advantage. Osipczak’s striking should give him the edge but he will need to be weary of Soto’s submissions. Nick Osipczak via TKO or KO

Dan Miller (11-4) -300 v. John Salter (5-1) +240 (Middleweight- 185 lbs.)

Dan Miller is a 29 year old BJJ black belt from New Jersey coming off three consecutive unanimous decision losses in the UFC. Miller lost to Chael Sonnen in May of 2009, Demian Maia in February of this year and Michael Bisping on May 29 at UFC 114. Miller is 3-3 in the UFC and has won 7 of his 11 via submission. He is replacing an injured Phil Baroni in this bout and could be cut from the UFC with a loss in this fight.

John Salter is a 25 year old former university wrestler at Lindenwood University in St Louis, Missouri where he won the NAIA national title at 174 lbs. in 2007. Salter went 4-0 before losing his UFC debut via TKO to Gerald Harris in January. Salter scored his first UFC victory on a technicality when Jason MacDonald broke his ankle after landing awkwardly on a takedown in May at UFC 113.

John Salter has won various grappling tournaments but should be no match for Dan Miller. Salter does not have the same experience level or the submission skills of his opponent. Dan Miller will look to keep this fight on the ground and apply a submission. If Salter has better striking he may be able to defend the takedown and score the upset win. Dan Miller needs to have striking that is effective enough to set up a takedown and work the submission to win the fight. Dan Miller via submission

Spike TV prelims

Andre Winner (11-3) -120 v. Nik Lentz (18-3) -110 (Lightweight- 155 lbs.)

Andre Winner was a finalist of TUF season 9 but lost a unanimous decision to Team UK teammate, Ross Pearson in the final. Winner did bounce back with a knockout of Rolando Delgado in November of 2009 followed by a decision win over Rafaello Oliveira in March of this year. Winner trains with Dan Hardy and Paul Daley at Team Rough House and has 6 of his 11 pro wins via decision.

Nik Lentz was an NCAA division 1 wrestler at the University of Minnesota and currently trains with the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy alongside such notable athletes as former lightweight champ Sean Sherk and current heavyweight champion, Brock Lesnar. Lentz has 9 wins and 2 draws in his past 11 fights and has compiled a record of 2-0-1 in the UFC with wins over Rafaello Oliveira and Rob Emerson and a draw with Thiago Tavares. Lentz has 7 wins via TKO or KO and 7 via submission.

This fight could go many ways. Both fighters are in their mid-twenties and are evolving in their game. Nik Lentz is a solid wrestler who should be able to take down his opponent. The knock against many UK fighters is their lack of a wrestling pedigree. Andre Winner will need to prove he can defend the takedown if he wants to win this fight. Nik Lentz needs to show that he has striking that is competent enough to hang with Winner and score a takedown. Lentz should be able to control Winner and keep him on the mat for the majority of the fight and get the win. Nik Lentz via decision, TKO via G&P or submission

Joe Lauzon (18-5) -500 v. Gabe Ruediger (17-5) +300 (Lightweight- 155 lbs.)

Joe Lauzon was a semi-finalist on The Ultimate Fighter season 5 but lost a decision to Manvel Gamburyan. Lauzon has since gone 5-2 in the UFC with wins over Jens Pulver and Jeremy Stephens. After the win over Stephens, Lauzon underwent knee surgery and did not fight for 11 months until meeting Sam Stout at UFC 108. Stout defeated Lauzon in a fight of the night in January by out-boxing the BJJ purple belt. Lauzon is a Boston-based fighter and has 14 of his 18 wins via submission.

Gabe Ruediger also appeared on TUF 5 but was less successful. Ruediger was not able to make weight for his fight in the house. He does have one fight in the UFC, suffering a KO loss to Melvin Guillard in 2006. Ruediger went undefeated in 2009 and has won 2 fights this year. He is riding a 6-0 streak in fights outside the UFC but has finished them all with 5 submissions and 1 TKO. Ruediger was signed to a contract with the UFC following an injury to Terry Etim that forced him out of this bout with Lauzon.

Joe Lauzon came off a long lay-off when he lost to Sam Stout and it showed. Lauzon was slower than usual and didn’t have the strength to grapple with Stout. Gabe Ruediger is being brought in as a dummy opponent for the hometown fighter, which the betting line will indicate. This is Joe Lauzon’s fight to lose. Lauzon has an opportunity to make a statement on Spike TV with a fight that will air right before one of the biggest MMA pay-per-views of all time The 26 year old Lauzon needs to remind everyone why he was once looked at as a top contender in the 155 lbs. division. Joe Lauzon via submission or TKO in Round 1 or 2

Main PPV card

Nate Diaz (12-5) -220 v. Marcus Davis (17-6) +170 (Welterweight- 170 lbs.)

Nate Diaz is 25 years old and the winner of The Ultimate Fighter season 5 at 155 lbs. After going 1-3 against top contenders in the division, Diaz opted to fight at welterweight and was victorious over Rory Markham via TKO. The win over Markham was in March of this year and was his third TKO victory. Diaz trains with his brother Nick, Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez and others with Cesar Gracie’s team in California. Diaz is a brown belt in BJJ under Gracie and has 8 of his 12 wins via submission.

Marcus Davis is a 37 year old former pro boxer who trains in Boston with Mark Delagrotte and his Team Sityodtong. “The Irish hand grenade” has gone 9-4 in the UFC since debuting with the company in 2005 as a contestant on TUF 2. Davis has good striking ability but the majority of his wins (8) via submission. Davis defeated Jonathan Goulet via TKO at UFC 113 in May.

This is a tough fight to call and one that is sure to be exciting. Both fighters have good boxing skills and will look to use them. Davis may be the better technical striker and have more power but Diaz has the reach and speed advantage. If Nate Diaz is able to get this fight to the ground he may be able to pull off a submission but Davis is a veteran who has only been submitted once in his career. Marcus Davis did look in top shape at the weigh-ins and knows how important this fight is for him. If Nate Diaz is focused he should win this fight but his focus can be called into question. Davis is a tough opponent and will be primed for this fight. This one means more for Marcus Davis, he’ll be looking to make a statement. Marcus Davis via TKO/KO or decision

Kenny Florian (14-4) -155 v. Gray Maynard (9-0) +125 (Lightweight- 155 lbs.)

Kenny Florian is on a two fight winning streak with rear-naked choke submission wins over Clay Guida and Takanori Gomi. Florian now trains with Georges St-Pierre and Zahabi MMA in Montreal. Florian was on the first season of TUF and fought at middleweight, losing in the finals to Diego Sanchez. Florian has since gone 11-2 in the UFC, losing only to former champions Sean Sherk and B.J. Penn.

Gray Maynard is an undefeated fighter and the only man to have defeated current lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar. Maynard primarily uses a wrestling and boxing style with 7 of his 9 wins via decision. Maynard earned a split-decision win against Nate Diaz in his January of this year. Maynard trains in Las Vegas with fellow lightweights Tyson Griffin and Evan Dunham at Xtreme Couture.

This fight will determine a new number one contender for the lightweight championship. Maynard is undefeated and has done so by using his wrestling to control opponents. Kenny Florian is training with GSP, who may be the best MMA wrestler in the game. Florian has looked stellar since deciding to train full-time in Montreal and has wins against some of the top athletes at his weight class. Florian’s muay-thai striking should be a problem for Maynard who will look to secure a takedown. Maynard needs to test the BJJ game of Kenny Florian and keep him on his back. Maynard will look to ground and pound his way to victory but Florian’s lankiness will make him too slippery for Maynard to hold down. Florian should be able to hurt Maynard on the feet and possibly finish the fight. Kenny Florian via TKO/KO, submission or decision

Demian Maia (12-2) -240 v. Mario Miranda (12-1) +190 (Middleweight- 185 lbs.)

Demian Maia is one of the best BJJ practitioners in MMA and is coming off a decision loss to Anderson Silva. Maia won his first 5 fights in the UFC via submission, including wins over Jason MacDonald and Chael Sonnen. Maia was knocked out by Nate Marquardt at UFC 109, but rebounded with a decision win over Dan Miller before facing the champion in their now infamous bout.

Mario Miranda is also Brazilian and is coming off a TKO victory over David Loiseau in June. Miranda was knocked out by Gerald Harris in his UFC debut and is 1-1 in the promotion. 6 of his 12 wins come via TKO with 4 submissions.

Demian Maia will need to be aware of Miranda’s punching power but should be able to handle this fight. Maia was supposed to fight Alan Belcher on September 15 but an injury to Belcher forced this fight to be made for August 28. Nate Marquardt v. Rousimar Palhares was originally on this card but was moved to the September 15 main event to replace Maia v. Belcher. Mario Miranda is not in the same league as Demian Maia and should be easily defeated. Demian Maia via submission Round 1 or 2

Randy Couture (18-10) -600 v. James Toney +400 (72-6 pro boxing) (Heavyweight- 265 lbs.)

Randy Couture is a UFC hall of famer, the only man to have held the heavyweight and light-heavyweight championship and one of the greatest fighters of all-time. Following losses to Brock Lesnar and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, the 47 year old Couture dropped back down to light-heavyweight and defeated Brandon Vera and Mark Coleman. “The Natural” is back at heavyweight for this fight, and weighed in at 220 lbs.

James Toney is a 42 year old heavyweight boxing champion who will be making his MMA debut. He defeated Evander Holyfield in 2003 and beat Matthew Greer via KO in September of 2009.

Randy Couture should win this fight. Couture is an excellent wrestler and someone with excellent knowledge of MMA. James Toney is a man with fast and dangerous hands. If James Toney can touch Randy Couture and land with any kind of force, the fight could end quickly. Randy Couture is a very smart fighter and probably too smart to be stopped by a man with one weapon in his arsenal. Couture should shoot in for a double-leg takedown and keep Toney on his back. Couture could be able to use ground and pound to finish the fight or submissions but this fight will end. Randy Couture via TKO or submission

Frankie Edgar (12-1, champion) +240 v. B.J. Penn (15-6, challenger) -300 (UFC Lightweight Championship- 155 lbs.)

B.J. Penn is coming off a 5 round decision loss to Frankie Edgar in April, losing the lightweight title. Penn looked unstoppable at lightweight after stringing together 3 impressive title defences against Sean Sherk, Kenny Florian and Diego Sanchez. Penn did lose to Georges St-Pierre between after his win to Sherk and as a former welterweight champion, Penn has always wanted to return to 170 lbs.

Frankie Edgar out-boxed and out-moved B.J. Penn to win the UFC lightweight title. He has gone 7-1 in the UFC with wins over Sean Sherk, Hermes Franca and Tyson Griffin. Edgar has a wrestling background and trains with Renzo Gracie in New Jersey.

B.J. Penn’s focus and preparation has been put into question throughout his career. Penn appears to show resolve and desire after losses but get too comfortable after wins. B.J. Penn is coming off a loss to Frankie Edgar. No one can question the talent of B.J. Penn and how dangerous he can be when he is focused on his task. Frankie Edgar fought a perfect fight and shocked many when he won in April and he may be able to do it again. Edgar used his boxing to out-point B.J. Penn and his wrestling to land the occasional takedown. Penn looked slower than his younger opponent and was chasing him for 25 minutes with little results. B.J. Penn will look to finish this fight and prove himself once again. Penn is a tough fighter who will put Edgar’s chin to the test. This fight could be an explosive stand-up war or an impressive jiu-jitsu show. Either way B.J. Penn wins via TKO/KO or submission

UFC 121 official for October 23. Five fights confirmed

Brock Lesnar

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – The baddest man on the planet, UFC® heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, is back in the main event for UFC 121, and unbeaten Cain Velasquez is looking to take his belt and become the first man to knock him out. Lesnar proved he had beaten the severe illness that kept him sidelined for a year by withstanding the onslaught by Shane Carwin at UFC 116 and defending his heavyweight title with a slick submission in the second round. His opponent at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, on October 23, 2010, Cain Velasquez, has already made short work out of the heavyweight division and he promises to make the most of his first shot at the title.

Also on this star-studded UFC 121 card, which is presented by Boost mobile, welterweight star Jake Shields makes his long-awaited UFC debut against perennial contender Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann. Also featured is an exciting welterweight matchup as Diego Sanchez battles Paulo Thiago, while it is teacher vs. student as Matt “The Hammer” Hamill takes on his coach from The Ultimate Fighter®, former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz. Rounding out the main card is a bout pitting rising heavyweight star Brendan Schaub against veteran contender Gabriel Gonzaga.

“Throughout fighting history, there has never been a Mexican heavyweight champion, but at UFC 121, Cain Velasquez will try to make history and become the first,” UFC President Dana White said. “To do that though, he must defeat the baddest man on the planet, UFC heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. Also, fresh off his destruction of Dan Henderson, Jake Shields enters the UFC, and he’s got his sights set on the welterweight title, but he’s got to get by Martin “The Hitman” Kampmann first.”

“Having hosted the first-ever UFC event in the state of California, we’re thrilled to partner with Dana and the entire organization once again,” said Honda Center President/CEO Tim Ryan. “If the buzz already surrounding this fight card is any indication, October 23 should be one of the sport’s biggest spectacles of all time.”

At UFC 121, Brock Lesnar (fighting out of Minneapolis-St. Paul, Minn./5-1) will be making his third title defense and, if successful, will tie Tim Sylvia for the most heavyweight title defenses. Lesnar will also set the record for most consecutive successful title defenses in the division. The four-time All-American wrestler at the University of Minnesota also won two Big Ten championships, as well as a National championship in the heavyweight division. The native of South Dakota showed his evolution as a fighter during UFC 116, as he was able to submit Shane Carwin with an arm triangle choke. A polarizing figure, Lesnar perhaps gained a stronger following from the courage and drive he displayed to overcome his bout with diverticulitis in 2009, and the best heavyweight on the planet has used his new lease on life to motivate him even further.

“I’m looking forward to getting right back in the Octagon,” Lesnar said. “After the long layoff, my last fight was just an appetizer, I’m still hungry. I’m in great condition and the timing couldn’t be better. Cain Velasquez is undefeated and he’s the legitimate No. 1 contender, but he’s not the guy that is going to take my UFC heavyweight title.  It’s not his time; it’s my time.  I’m coming to California to defend my crown, and on October 23rd, I’ll be walking out of the Octagon with my hand raised and the belt around my waist. Cain will be leaving with his first loss. It’s as simple as that.”

At 8-0 as a pro, Cain Velasquez (fighting out of San Jose, Calif./8-0) is the 20th fighter to fight for a UFC title with less than 10 professional fights. Of the 19 previous fighters, only four were successful in winning the title and interestingly, all were heavyweight fighters. Much like Lesnar, Velasquez was an outstanding collegiate wrestler, as he was a two-time All-American at Arizona State University. His speed and power may be the keys to a victory over Lesnar, as Velasquez has been very successful in using his athleticism to beat bigger foes throughout his career.

“I feel honored to be fighting for the heavyweight title against Brock,” Velasquez said. “He is a great fighter with a lot of size and is super athletic. This will be a great fight with a lot of action and it means a lot to me to be fighting for the title in L.A., close to my hometown.  I will have a lot of people behind me cheering me on.”

After establishing an impressive international reputation, Jake Shields (fighting out of San Francisco, Calif./25-4-1) has made the transition to the Octagon to test his skills against the best fighters in the world. Shields’ resume is an impressive one, as he has been successful in defeating Carlos Condit, Mike Pyle, Robbie Lawler and former PRIDE champion and UFC veteran Dan Henderson. Shields’ signing has been highly anticipated by the MMA community and his first fight will be a true test to where he stands in the welterweight division.

An established fighter with the UFC, Martin Kampmann (fighting out of Las Vegas, Nev./17-3) is riding a two fight win streak, and has also won four of his last five. Overall in the UFC, “The Hitman” has compiled a record of 8-2, dating back to August of 2006. The Denmark native has tremendous knockout power and an underrated ground game, which could prove to be a tough combination for Shields.

Diego Sanchez (fighting out of Albuquerque, N.M./23-4) made his UFC debut on the first season of The Ultimate Fighter, defeating Kenny Florian to win a contract with the organization. The “Nightmare” was successful in the welterweight division, but chose to move to lightweight where he fought for the championship against BJ Penn. Sanchez has since moved back to the welterweight division, as well as back to Greg Jackson’s camp, where he hasn’t trained since he fought Josh Koscheck in 2007.

Special ops police officer Paulo Thiago (fighting out of Brasilia, Brazil/13-2) made a splash in the welterweight division in 2009 when he defeated Josh Koscheck via first round knockout. Thiago has only five UFC fights in his career, however he has proved to be a tough opponent with an iron chin. The submission specialist will be a formidable opponent for Sanchez, in a matchup that will help two fighters realize their position within the welterweight division.

One of the most recognizable figures in the MMA community, Tito Ortiz (fighting out of Huntington Beach, Calif./16-7-1) is at an interesting place in his storied career. The “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” will be taking on his pupil from the third season of The Ultimate Fighter, Matt Hamill, and while Ortiz has dealt with some recent adversity due to injuries, the former world champion is healthy and firing on all cylinders in his quest to beat “The Hammer” and get his title back.

Matt Hamill (fighting out of Utica, N.Y. by way of Loveland, Ohio/10-2) has been flying under the radar recently, quietly putting together a four fight win streak. Impressive victories over Mark Munoz and Keith Jardine, coupled with a DQ victory over Jon Jones, have elevated Hamill to the upper echelon of the light heavyweight division. His status as a three-time Division III NCAA wrestling champion, as well as a two time world champion in freestyle wrestling, has helped “The Hammer” avoid 90% of total takedowns, as he continues to develop his standup technique.

Making his debut at The Ultimate Fighter 10 finale, Brendan Schaub (fighting out of Denver, Colo./7-1) has been victorious in his last two fights, most recently at UFC 116 when he defeated Chris Tuchscherer via first round knockout. A former Golden Gloves champion, “The Hybrid” has obtained a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which will help elevate his status in the heavyweight division.

Another fighter who is at a crossroads in his career is Gabriel Gonzaga (fighting out of Ludlow, Mass./11-5). Coming off tough battles with two of the division’s best in Junior Dos Santos and Shane Carwin, Gonzaga has seven wins in the UFC and has not been shy to fight top competition, as he has also fought Mirko Cro Cop, Fabricio Werdum and Randy Couture.

Lloyd Galindo was Robbed!

At Ringside 7 “No Escape” Lloyd Galindo made his MMA debut after two months of training at GAMMA/BTT Canada. His first fight was a tough challenge against the very strong and tough Daylin Logan. Logan has been running through all of his competition in impressive fashion. As he (Logan) says: “Don’t blink, you’ll miss it!” and this was true for his last four fights. Galindo was the first fighter in Quebec to put a dent in Logan’s armor and bring him into the second round. This was a rough fight with Logan attacking relentlessly, Galindo was able to take some punishment while transitioning continuously. During the first round Logan blew out his knee, but as a very tough person he continued to fight with the same intensity. The fight came to a conclusion when Logan kneed Galindo in the face while both where grounded. Galindo looked at the referee Phillip Chartier and gestured that he was hit the face by the knee, but the fight was stopped for the five minutes that Galindo was entitled to; instead Logan pulled Galindo into a rear naked choke submission for the victory. The knee was illegal and was done in front of more than three members of the Athletic Commission, and no one did anything about it. They admitted to the corner afterward that it illegal, and they replayed it twice on the big screens. Still they didn’t change anything! The members of the commission that sit around the cage are there to make sure that the rules are followed and as a second set of eyes and ears for the referees. This is the biggest crock of shit ever! As a fighter Logan should know the rules and as an Athletic Commission they need to enforce those rules. Instant replays need to added to the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, because this is just getting ridiculous and absolutely absurd. This decision needs to be reversed to a disqualification, Daylin Logan cheated to win and Lloyd Galindo was robbed in his first fight.
