Kang, "Haggis Basher" winners at W-1: Judgement Day

Denis Kang stepped into the Warrior-1 cage for the first time on Saturday, June 19 in the main event of W-1 Judgement Day, held in Laval, Québec. Kang’s first punch knocked down his opponent Dae Won Kim, he then secured an arm-triangle choke to force the first stanza submission. Adrian “The Bully” Wooley defended his W-1 bantwamweight (135lbs.) championship in a dominating performance over Cesar Gracie trained, Randy Spence. John “Haggis Basher” Fraser scored his fourth consecutive victory and exacted some revenge in a rematch with Thierry “The Surgeon” Quenneville. Fraser had lost to Quenneville earlier in his career but won this bout via submission due to strikes to become the first Warrior-1 featherweight (145lbs.) champion.

Warrior One MMA will be presenting their fifth event: Judgment Day at the Colisee Laval this Saturday. This stacked card will feature the W-1 debuts of Denis Kang and Quebec MMA superstar Steve Bosse. Judgment Day also features two championship bouts as W-1 Bantamweight Champion Adrian “The Bully” Wooley defends his title for the first time against Randy Spence. MFL 2: Battle Ground round-by-round results

Ringside Report was at the Claude Robillard Centre tonight, Saturday February 27 for Mixed Fight League’s second MMA event, MFL 2: Battleground. A scheduled fight between Jason Cecil and Yan Pellerin was cancelled before the show to drop the card from ten fights to nine.

Lyndon Whitlock (0-0-0)  v. Pierre-Étienne Marcoux (2-2-0) (145 lbs.)

Round 1

Marcoux connected with a body kick but was quickly taken down to the mat. Whitlock kept his opponent down as Marcoux struggled to get to his feet. Whitlock postured up and landed a dropping punch, and jumped awkwardly to get back into Marcoux’s guard. Whitlock advanced to north-south position, then took his opponent’s back. Whitlock worked to sink his hooks in and locked in a rear-naked choke forcing Marcoux to tap out instantaneously.

Louis Philippe Gauthier (1-0-0) v. Joey Gambino (3-0-0) (145 lbs.)

Round 1

Gambino connected early with a big right hand that dropped Gauthier. Gauthier was able to make his way back to his feet and clinch up his opponent. Gambino delivered some knees to the body from the clinch and pushed his opponent away. Gambino landed crisp punches that knocked down his opponent. Gambino worked some ground and pound from Gauthier’s guard. Gambino was unable to pass the guard, so he stood up and kicked Gauthier in the leg. The referee stood the fighters and Gambino continued to land strikes. Gauthier went down again and Gambino landed some elbows in side-control. Gauthier blocked an attempt to advance into a mount and pushed Gambino back to his feet. Gambino stalked his opponent and landed another big right hand but Gauthier stayed on his feet. Gambino landed some punches that pushed his opponent against the cage but Gauthier was able to push back and score a takedown. Gauthier tried to work from Gambino’s guard but got trapped in an arm-bar. Gambino held on to the submission hold and forced Gauthier to tap out.

Eon Shirley (0-3-0) v. Daylin Logan (2-0-0) (185 lbs.)

Round 1

Logan rushed in with a barrage of punches and scooped up his opponent down to the canvas. Logan improved to full mount and landed some punches. Shirley scrambled and got Logan back to his guard. Logan quickly transitioned into side-control, back into full mount. Shirley swept him and reversed the position but Logan reversed back and scored several punches from the top position. Logan punished his opponent with more shots and the referee intervened to stop the action.

Louis-Philippe Carles (6-1-0) v. Chris Vorano (3-5-0) (170 lbs.)

Round 1

Both fighters were hesitant to engage in the first minute of the fight. Carles connected with a right hand but Vorano scored with a head kick. Carles was able to work his jab but Vorano landed some leg kicks. Carles connected with a punch that semed to rock Vorano but he stayed on his feet. Vorano slipped on a head kick attempt and was met with a stiff punch to the face when he stood up. Vorano attempted a takedown but Carles maintained control and fell on top of Vorano. Carles worked some punches and elbows from half-guard. Carles continued the punishment, laying into his opponent with looping right hands. Vorano was unable to escape the position and tapped out to end the fight. Vorano lay on the mat for a while after the fight and was noticeably shaken up.

Dimitri Waardenburg (3-4-0) v. Mark Fraser (1-4-1) (135 lbs.)

Round 1

Both fighters exchanged punches in the first minute and Fraser scored a takedown. Waardenburg reversed the position on the ground and got into Fraser’s guard. Waardenburg improved into the mount and landed a few punches that knocked out Fraser and stopped the fight.  Fraser was out cold and very slow to get back to his feet.

Martin Grandmont (9-5-0) v. Sébastien Garguier (5-3-0) (155 lbs.)

Round 1

Grandmont threw a  head kick that was caught by his opponent. Garguier used the leverage to push Grandmont into the cage and land some punches. Grandmont pushed back and scored some strikes of his own. Both fighters exchanged and landed several punches, as they cut a torrid pace. Garguier pushed the action but Grandmont landed good counter strikes, including a big counter right-hook. Grandmont connected on a punching combo but Garguier stayed on his feet and scored some punches. Grandmont was cut above his right eye but and took several shots to the face. Grandmont and Garguier went toe-to-toe, giving and receiving several big punches. Garguier landed even more punches and the refere stopped the action to check on Grandmont’s face, which was a bloody mess after just four minutes. The doctor allowed the fight to continue and Martin Grandmont unleashed a fury of punches. Grandmont pushed his opponent back into the cage and the referee stopped the fight.

Bruno Hosier (4-0-0) v. Tom Murphy (5-0-0) (heavyweights)

Round 1

Hosier scored an early leg and body kick in a tentative first minute for both competitors. Murphy was able to take Hosier down and worked some punches from side-control. The referee stood the fighters upand warned Murphy for punches to the back of the head. Murphy went for a takedown but Hosier stopped the attempt by landing elbows. The fighters were again separated and Hoiser was awarned for shots to the back of the head. Murphy scored a takedown and worked some punches from half-guard into side-control. Murphy transitioned to the back-mount on Hosier who rolled over and ate several punches with Murphy on top of him. After a few more seconds of ground and pound, the referee separated the fighters and ended the bout.

Steve Bossé (6-1-0)  v. Marvin Eastman (16-12-1) (205 lbs.)

Round 1

Eastman pushed Bossé into the cage early in the fight and held him against the fence. Bossé landed some knees to the body and reversed the position on Eastman. The referee separated the fighters and Eastman charged in, landing a right hand. Eastman pinned Bossé against the fence but Bossé again reversed the position. Bossé landed knees and punches to the body as the fighters jostled for positioning. Eastman and Bossé exchanged knees to the body as they grappled against the fence. The ref again separated the men after a lack of activity. Bossé and Eastman collided with punches and Eastman attempted a takedown. Bossé backed up against the fence and avoided the takedown and reversed the position to push Eastman into the cage. Bossé unloaded with a punching combination and continued to work the clinch against the fence. Bossé nailed Eastman with some punches as he pushed Bossé away. Eastman pushed back and scored a takedown but Bossé was quick to get to his feet. Eastman landed another takedown but Bossé attempted a kimura armbar just as the round concluded. Round 2

Bossé scored some punches and avoided a takedown in the first minute of the fight. Bossé again clinched Eastman against the fence and worked some knees to the body and legs. Eastman pushed Bossé away but he came back with a flurry of punches. Eastman countered with a right of his own and pushed Bossé against the fence. Bossé went for a single-leg but Eastman blocked it and held on to his head and forced the ref to separate them after some inactivity. Bossé landed a punch, Eastman went for a takedown but Bossé again pushed him against the fence and grinded away, working knees to the body and uppercuts in the clinch. Bossé moved back and landed some punches but Eastman fired back and scored with some strikes of his own. Bossé again clinched him against the fence with a single-underhook, working punches to the head and body. Bossé landed a flurry of punches but Eastman rushed back with a takedown attempt as the round came to an end. Ringside Report scores Round 2 for Steve Bossé: 10-9

Round 3

Bossé landed a punch but Eastman fired back with a leg kick and a big takedown. Eastman could not keep Bossé down and they were quickly back to their feet. Bossé pinned Eastman against the fence and continued to grind away with knees to the body. Eastman held on to Bossé in the clinch and landed some elbow strikes and punches. Eastman landed a striking combo but Bossé landed one of his own and pushed him against the fence. The ref separated the fighters and Eastman rushed in with a takedown attempt that was stuffed by Bossé He pinned Eastman against the fence and landed some hard punches to tthe body and a big uppercut. Eastman tried to push away and Bossé landed another punching combo. Eastman rushed in for the takedown but gain Bossé backed into the fence and avoided it. Bossé reversed the position and scored with a single-leg takedown. Bossé landed several punches from a half-guard but Eastman struggled back to his feet. Bossé landed a big right hand and kept Eastman clinched up against the fence as the fight came to a close. Ringside Report scores Round 3 for Steve Bossé: 10-9

David Loiseau (18-9-0) v. Chester Post (8-18-1) (205 lbs.)

Round 1

Loiseau landed a leg kick and attempted a takedown but stumbled. Loiseau recovered and pushed Post into the fence but was not able to land any shots and referee Yves Lavigne separated the men. Loiseau landed a head kick and scored a takedown on Post. Loiseau worked in Post’s guard and dropped a big elbow. Post held him in a high guard and worked some strikes from the bottom but Loiseau postured up and landed a big elbow. Loiseau continued to work from Post’s guard with punches to the body and big right hands to the face. Loiseau unleashed a flurry of left and right hands forcing the referee to intervene and stop the fight.

Mixed Fight League is hosting its second event tomorrow night, Saturday, February 27 at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex and held the weigh-ins today at Bistro Boulevard in Montreal. Ringside Report was there to get the official results. Fireworks were expected and tension was palpable, in particular between light heavyweight fighters Marvin “The Beastman” Eastman and Steve Bossé. Eastman holds wins over the likes of Jason MacDonald as well as Quinton Rampage Jackson, while Bossé boasts a record of 6 wins and only 1 loss. Another fighter with UFC experience is on this fight card as well; David “The Crow” Loiseau will face Chester Post, a late addition to the card and last-minute replacement for Isidro “Chilo” Gonzales, who withdrew from the fight. 1. Pierre-Étienne Marcoux (2-1-0) weighed in at 139 lbs and his opponent Lyndon Whitlock (1-0-0) weighed in at 142 lbs.

 2. Joey Gambino (3-0-0) came in at 145 lbs while Louis-Philippe Gauthier (1-0-0) came in at 144 lbs.

3. Daylin Logan (2-0-0) weighed in just over 185 lbs with an official weight of 186 lbs while Eon Shirley (0-3-0) came in below, at 183 lbs.

 4. Jason Cecil (5-10-0), who came in at 206 lbs, will fight Yan Pellerin (9-12-0) who weighed in at 228 lbs.

5. Fighters slated for number 5 fight in the middleweight division did not weigh in. Justin Primmer (1-2-0) vs Nordine Taleb (1-1-0).

6. Louis-Philippe Carle (6-1-0), weighing in at exactly 170 lbs, will fight Chris Vorano (3-5-0), who weighed in at 169 lbs.

 7. Mark Fraser (1-4-1) weighed in at 134 lbs and his opponent Dimitri Waardenburg (3-4-0) weighed in at 138 lbs.

8. Sebastien Garguier (5-2-0) came in at 153 lbs and will fight Martin Grandmont (9-4-0) who came in at 158 lbs.

 9. Hosier Bruno (4-0-0) weighed in at 222 lbs and his opponent Thomas Murphy (5-0-0) weighed in at 233 lbs.

 10. Steve Bossé (6-1-0), who came in at 203 lbs, will fight Marvin Eastman (16-12-1), who weighed in at 205 lbs.

11. David Loiseau (18-9-0) weighed in at 198 lbs and will fight Chester Post (6-18-1) who weighed in at 202 lbs.

Guillaume Fortier (0-0) v. Benoit Guillonet (1-0) 150 lbs.

Guillonet scores an early takedown but gets locked up in Fortier’s guard. Guillonet works some hammer fists in the guard and scores some punches but is unable to do significant damage. The round expires with Guillonet remaining in the guard of Guillaume Fortier. Ringside Report scores this round 10-8 in favour of Guillonet.

Fortier throws a kick to open the second round but gets caught with another takedown. Guillonet works a kimura on the ground but can’t lock it in. In side control, Guillonet attempted a transition into full mount but Foriter is able to roll out and rise to his feet. Fortier scored a takedown but landed in a guillotine attempt but Fortier escaped. Guillonet was able to score the full mount, land some punches and lock in a kimura armbar for the submission victory at 2:57 of Round 2.

Jeff Sharkey (0-0) v. Lee Villeneuve (0-0) 170 lbs.

Villeneuve scored a quick takedown after a brief exchange. Villeneuve worked some good ground n’ pound from side guard and transitioned from side guard into a guillotine attempt. Sharkey appeared to get choked out so Villenueve released the hold. The referee Jerry Bolin was very slow to stop the fight forcing Villeneuve to add some extra punches to the already unconscious fighter. Sharkey was slow to get back to his feet but appeared fine after the fight. Lee Villeneuve wins via TKO in the first round of his first fight.

Jeremy Gagnon (0-0) v. Rejean Groulx (1-0) 145 lbs.

Jeremy Gagnon dove in for an early takedown but Groulx tied him up in a Muay Thai clinch and landed some knees to the face. Groulx then took Gagnon down to the mat but landed in a guillotine attmpt by Gagnon. Groulx was able to escape the guillotine and worked some punches in Jeremy Gagnon’s guard. Gangon stayed active on the bottom attempting an armbar but Groulx managed to escape submission. Groulx went back to working punches in Gagnon’s guard but had to escape another armbar attempt. Groulx tried a submission of his own, locking in an arm triangle as the first round expired. Ringside Report scores this round 10-9 in favour of Rejean Groulx.

Jeremy Gagnon came into round two, swinging with big leg kicks and looping left and right hands. Groulx clinched him against the cage but Gagnon escaped and got dropped with a takedown. Groulx worked some elbows in side control to the already swollen right side of Gagnon’s face. The referee stood the fighters up, almost at random. Groulx threw some punches before scoring another takedown and attempting a kimura armbar. Groulx was unable to lock in the submission and found himself in Gangon’s guard. Groulx passed into side-control and gained the back-mount on a turning Gagnon. Rejean Groulx attempted a rear-naked choke but Gagnon turned over. Groulx landed in full mount, hit some punches and tried another rear-naked choke as time expired in Round 2. Ringside Report scores this round 10-9 in favour of Rejean Groulx.

Jeremy Gagnon started the third round with two inside leg kicks before being taken down. Rejean Groulx attempted another rear-naked choke but was unsuccessful and opted to work some punches in full mount. Gagnon managed to get back to his and hit several punches on Rejean Groulx who clutched to his leg and held on for the third and final round to expire. Ringside Report scores this round 10-9 for Jeremy Gagnon.

The judges score this fight 29-28, 30-26, 29-27 all for the winner via unanimous decision Rejean Groulx

Stephane Bernadel (1-1) v. Eugenio Carpine (3-2) 145 lbs.

Carpine scored some leg and body kicks to start the fight. Bernadel and Carpine engaged in a clinch and hit each other with a flurry of punches. Bernadel connected and pushed Carpine into the cage with right and left hands. Carpine threw some looping punches but Bernadel was able to avoid. Bernadel hit Carpine with a big knee to the face that dropped him to the mat. Bernadel then locked in a rear-naked choke for the first round submissions victory.

Stephane Pelletier (0-0) v. Pierrot Marcoux (1-0) 135 lbs

Pelletier scored a takedown in the first 10 seconds of action but Marcoux got back up and fell back down with a guillotine attempt. Pelletier escaped the attempt and threw some punches in full mount but Marcoux stood back up and connected on a big right hand and body kicks. Both men connected with wild punches and Pelletier wound up in the mount position reigning down some punches. Marcoux gave up his back allowing Pelletier to lock in a rear-naked choke for the victory via submission in the first round of his first professional fight.

Rowan Cunningham (6-2) v. Fabio Holanda () 170 lbs.

Cunningham started the fight throwing punches but Holanda quickly scored a trip-takedown that put him in Cunningham’s half-guard. Holanda worked some punches and was able to pass into full mount. Cunningham escaped and got back to his feet where the two fighters traded punches with Holanda getting the better of the exchange. Holanda dropped Cunningham with a right hand and tried to finish him with some ground and pound but Cunningham got back to his feet. Holanda dropped his opponent again and hit him with several punches. Many ringside were calling the fight to be stopped, even Holanda looked to referee Jerry Bolin to stop the fight which he eventually did. Fabio Holanda scores a first round (4:14) TKO victory.

Lindsey Hawkes (4-2) v. Guillaume De Lorenzi (5-1) 155 lbs.

De Lorenzi scored a takedown in the first 30 seconds and hit Hawkes with some punches from the top position. De Lorenzi managed to get into a full mount but Hawkes gave him his back and De Lorenzi attempted a rear-naked choke. De Lorenzi was unable to lock it in but did keep Hawkes grounded and works some punches to the face and knees to the body. Ringside Report scores it 10-9 in favour of De Lorenzi.

Hawkes and De Lorenzi exchanged some punches to start Round2 with Hawkes getting the better of the exchange. De Lorenzi then scored a takedown to continue to work his ground and pound in Lindsey Hawkes’ guard. After taking some punishment, Hawkes was able to stand up but was quickly taken down again by De Lorenzi. Hawkes face was battered as he walked to his corner after the round. Ringside Report scores Round 2 for Guillaume De Lorenzi, 10-9.

Guillaume De Lorenzi hit some punches and a big knee to Hawkes’ face as the final round began. De Lorenzi was unable to score on two separate takedown attempts and took a hard right hand from Hawkes. De Lorenzi replied with a stiff punch of his own but caught a knee when attempting a takedown. De Lorenzi was able to score a takedown and but Hawkes was able to stand up and connect with another right hand. De Lorenzi pushed Hawkes against the cage and scored a final takedown as the fight came to a conclusion. Ringside Report scores the final round 10-9 in favour of Guillaume De Lorenzi.

The Judges score the fight 30-25, 30-27, 30-25 all for the winner via unanimous decision, Guillaume De Lorenzi.

Paul Reed (10-3) v. Thierry Quenneville (13-8) 150 lbs.

Paul Reed connected with a right hand and drove into Quenneville pushing a clinch into the cage. Quenneville swung Reed against the cage and took him down to the mat, landing in half guard. After Quenneville spent over a minute on top of Reed but was not able to improve his position and the men were stood up. Reed again pinned Quenneville against the cage but Quenneville pushed off and landed a jab and right cross to the bloody nose of Paul Reed. Ringside Report scores Round 1 for Thierry Quenneville, 10-9.

The second round began with Quenneville missing a kick and Reed whiffing on a spinning back-fist. Queneville pushed Reed into the cage and attempted a takedown but Paul Reed reversed and pinned Quenneville against the fence. The referee separated the fighters and Quenneville hit his opponent with some impressive punches. Reed drove in for a takedown, pinning Quenneville against the fence but he was reversed and Quenneville scored a takedown. Quenneville was able to score the mount and lay into his opponent with elbows before taking his back. Quenneville went for the rear-naked choke with 60 seconds remaining in the second round but was unable to lock it in and the referee stood the fighters back up. Quenneville ended his dominant round with a leg kick as it came to a close. Ringside Report scores it 10-8 in favour of Thierry Quenneville.

Thierry Quenneville opened up the final round with a head-kick and some knees to Reed’s mid-section. Reed locked up but Quenneville scored another takedown and worked some ground and pound before taking his back. Quenneville worked some more punches but was unable to lock in a choke. Reed reversed and landed in Quenneville’s guard but Quenneville escaped quickly and got to his feet. Quenneville got behind Reed and slowly took him down into a body triangle. Reed spun around, into Quenneville’s guard and hit some elbows and fists in an attempt to set-up a guillotine choke. Quenneville escaped, rasied to his feet and hammered away with punches and a flying knee as the round came to a close. Ringside Report scores the final round 10-9 for Thierry Quenneville.

Brown and Bosse square off with Bosse scoring a knee to the mid-section before Brown pinned him with a clinch against the fence. Brown worked some knees to Bosse’s mid section and Bosse replied with one that caught Brown low. The referee gave him some time to recover and the two men squared off again. Brown pushed Bosse against the fence and the force caused the door to unlock. The referee stopped the fight so that the door could be fixed. When the fight resumed, Bosse connected with a punch that knocked Brown down. Bosse pounced with a few punches before the referee jumped in to halt the bout. The winner via TKO and first ever Ringside MMA light-heavyweight champion, Steve “The Boss” Bosse.
